Highlights K2022

GÖTTFERT presents numerous product innovations at K2022

(Buchen) GÖTTFERT Werkstoff Prüfmaschinen GmbH will present product innovations and numerous further developments for quality assurance and characterization of plastics, elastomers, thermosets as well as recycled materials at K2022 from 19-26 October.

► Melt Flow Indexer (mi40 – visco)

GÖTTFERT melt index testers enable standardized test procedures to characterize the flowability of plastics at defined temperature and constant applied force. The devices are increasingly used for incoming goods inspection and quality assurance of plastics. With the add-on „viscosity measurement“ the mi40 becomes a mi40 visco. This enables the plastometer to perform viscosity measurements according to the standard for capillary rheometers ISO 11443.

► IV Tester

The characterization of the intrinsic viscosity of polyester (PET) and polyamide (PA) is made possible with the IV Tester via a correlation relationship to the melt index without any harmful solvents. With this established measurement method, the IV Tester is ideally suited for the incoming goods and quality control of PET and PA.

► Automatization of viscosity measurements

GÖTTFERT has been offering different degrees of automation of melt index testers for several decades.

Automation of test equipment has various advantages, for example, the „human“ factor is eliminated by a standardized measuring procedure, which results in increased reproducibility of the measurement results. In addition, automated testing relieves the physical burden on users in the laboratory, allowing them to look after several test devices in the lab.

The MI-ROBO from GÖTTFERT enables melt index measurements according to ISO 1133 or ASTM D1238 for plastics to be carried out fully automatically. This means an automated filling of the test chamber as well as measurement execution. This is followed by automatic cleaning of the test chamber as well as pre-cleaning and changing of the capillary. With the add-on „Method A“, it is possible to carry out a semi-automated determination of the melt density according to Method A. The measurement is carried out automatically. Measurement according to Method A is used in particular for composites or for polymers with a high glass fiber content.

In addition to the established fully automated MI-ROBO, which is designed for the measurement of MFR and MVR, a partially automated capillary rheometer „RG - auto“ will be presented at the K2022, which enables a considerable simplification of viscosity determination in the high shear rate range of plastics processing due to the increased degree of automation.

► Capillary Rheometer Add-on: Normal Stress measurement

The existing series of GÖTTFERT high pressure capillary rheometers is available with different test loads 20, 25, 50, 75 or 120 kN.

In addition to determining the viscosity of plastic melts, GÖTTFERT also offers a modular platform for advanced characterization of polymers. A capillary rheometer forms the basic instrument, various additional functions or add-ons such as CONTIFEED, thermal conductivity, pvT (isothermal and isobaric), back pressure chamber, threshold measuring device, strain (Rheotens, Haul-Off) and Shark-Skin can be added modularly.

At K2022, GÖTTFERT will present another add-on for normal stress characterization of polymers and rubbers.

The normal stress nozzle can simultaneously measure steady-state shear and extensional viscosity as well as the first normal stress difference. This add-on enables effective determination of normal stress at high shear rates, which is not possible with conventional technology. Different materials can be very easily distinguished with respect to the onset of flow instabilities.

It also appears possible to use the data for process simulation of converging regions due to the geometric similarity compared to conventional capillaries.

► Online determination of elongation viscosity

Online monitoring of rheological properties in polymerization and pilot plants is essential for fast and effective process control. In addition to pure polymer production, plastics compounding tailored to specific material properties is becoming increasingly important.

In addition to the previously established measurement parameters Melt Flow Rate or Melt Volume Rate (MFR/MVR value), GÖTTFERT Online Rheometers now also offer the possibility to determine the extensional viscosity online (resp. inline).

In addition, GÖTTFERT Online Rheometers can be equipped with special melt pumps, allowing the measuring head to be used on extruders with recycled material.

► PVT 500 – enlarged temperature range

The PVT 500 enables isothermal as well as isobaric PVT measurements, which describe the thermodynamic behavior of plastics, elastomers and thermosets. The collected data are of high importance especially for the injection molding process and the related simulation data. A newly developed hybrid cooling system allows the advantages of both air cooling and liquid cooling to be utilized by means of an external temperature control unit.

The PVT 500 Hybrid thus offers an effective extension of the PVT500 towards higher and constant cooling rates over the entire temperature curve. This enables the description of the crystallization behavior of semi-crystalline materials and extends the application of the data also for significantly different mold thicknesses with small cross sections.

► Thermoset Capillary Rheometer (TCR)

In the case of thermoset molding compounds, rheological characterization has so far not been possible at all or only to some extent with test conditions far removed from later production. The TCR described below was developed on the basis of the already established RCR. The test device consists of a temperature-controlled feed channel in which the material is preconditioned under defined pressure and volume at a preselected temperature and is pressed at a pressure of up to 1600bar into a flow spiral with up to 5 pressure and 4 temperature sensors.

The device allows effective determination of rheological properties in the range of injection temperature and over the flow path in the mold at crosslinking temperature. During the test, in addition to the rheological properties, the crosslinking behavior is determined similar to the measurement in the Vulcameter.

► Rubber Process Analyzer (RPA)

The RPA is a widely used instrument in the rubber processing industry for determining the dynamic rheological properties of uncrosslinked and crosslinked materials. The extension of the deformation angle of the tester to 360° makes it possible to determine the transient viscosity up to a shear rate of 25 1/s. The transient viscosity is determined at constant deformation and enables the determination of steady-state rheological data.

Further, large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) is a measurement method currently widely used to provide information on nonlinear rheological properties of polymer melts and blends. Extending the evaluation of the LAOS method with the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) increases the selectivity to differences in the structure of the polymers and fillers.
